I began doing mud runs two years ago and loved the challenge. August 2013, I decided to do the Spartan race with a distance of eight and a half miles. I weighed 315 pounds and did the basic bench and treadmill workout at LA fitness for training before the race. Needless to say I was able to complete the race but completely exhausted and a finishing time of over 4 hours and 30 minutes. I was constantly in need of help at every obstacle and paramedics had to make sure I can complete the race.
I was committed to turning that all around the following year. A friend told me of a CrossFit gym opening up nearby and I decided to give it a shot. With most new people who walk into the gym or “box” I was intimated by the workouts and the shape most of the members were in. I stuck with it and found that the members and coaches were friendly and supportive. After a few months I found that the weight was coming and I was doing things I have always told myself I would never do since grade school. Never in my life did I ever think I would do a pull up on my own or climb rope.
September 2014 I ran the exact same race as the previous year but with different results. I trained harder in distance running, weighed 250 pounds, and did crossfit for a year. Instead of feeling scared I was confident and eager to race. As a result I completed the race an hour and a half faster! I was the one helping others complete the obstacles and I was able to enjoy the end of the race.
Crossfit Alpha Dog has helped me change the way I look and feel. I am healthier, much more confident (at work, at athletic events, life in general) and I continue to improve. When I workout at Crossfit Alpha Dog, I feel if I can do things I have told myself I can never do, what can stop me from doing more?
